Women account for nearly 69% of side effects from Covid vaccines in Switzerland

Swiss health authority said nearly 70% of people reporting side effects from Covid-19 vaccination in the country were women.

Data published Thursday by Swissmedic showed that out of 597 reports of suspected vaccine adverse reactions in Switzerland, the majority were women.

The health authority said 343 reports were for the vaccine jointly developed by Pfizer PFE,
+ 0.74%
and BioNTech BNTX,
+ 2.35%,
while 251 were associated with Moderna mRNA,
+ 4.41%
Vaccine against covid19. The vaccine was not specified in three cases.

Women accounted for 68.7% of adverse reaction reports, while men were affected in 27.1% of cases. There were a few cases (4.2%) where no gender was specified.

The majority of reports – 70.4% – were not serious, while 29.6% were classified as serious, Swissmedic said.

The most frequently reported reactions in cases classified as severe were fever, shortness of breath, existing Covid-19 disease, headache and migraine, and recurrence of shingles.

In 21 of the severe cases, those affected died at different intervals after receiving the vaccine, Swissmedic said. However, their average age was 85, and the majority had pre-existing conditions such as infections, cardiovascular events, or lung and respiratory disease that occurred regardless of vaccination.

“The adverse reaction reports received and analyzed to date do not change the positive benefit-risk profile of Covid-19 vaccines.”

– Swissmedic

“There is no concrete evidence to suggest that vaccination was the cause of death. Drug regulatory authorities in other countries and the WHO have come to similar conclusions when assessing deaths with a temporal link to Covid-19 vaccines, ”Swissmedic said on its website.

“The adverse reaction reports received and analyzed to date do not change the positive benefit-risk profile of Covid-19 vaccines. The reports now give us a clearer picture of the safety of vaccines in daily use. This largely confirms their profile of known side effects. “
